Temperature Control

Did you know getting the room temperature ‘just right’ is super important for your baby’s sleep? It’s one of those things that’s easy to overlook, but it’s a game-changer!

Bundling up your baby too much or not keeping them cozy enough can disturb their sleep. And 

You don’t need to cover both their head and feet. In fact, some experts say babies regulate their body temperature through their heads, so a covered head could up the risk of SIDS.

The best way to keep your little star warm and safe? Think light layers. Start with a onesie, add a warm one-piece sleeper, and then a snug swaddle or preferably a cotton sleep sack. It’s like a cozy, safe sandwich!

And the room? If it feels like a winter wonderland, you might want to turn up the heat a bit. Aim to keep their sleep space between 68 and 72 degrees – that’s the sweet spot for baby Zzz’s.

Investing in a room thermometer is a great option. If you have a baby, you have to care for room temperature. Its very inexpensive so consider getting one. 

So, remember, it’s not about a mountain of blankets, but the right layers and room temp to make sure your baby sleeps like, well, a baby!

Parental Relaxation

Did you know your baby is like a mini mood detective? If you’re stressed, they often get the memo and might turn up the fussiness. 

There is no scientific proof but this fact is what I learned during my parenting journey. and almost all mothers will agree on this. 

So, Stay calm. Easier said than done, right? But it’s worth a shot. 

Try some quick meditation, or say yes to help when it’s offered. And how about some positivity on the go? 

Tuck some cheerful affirmation cards into the diaper cart for a quick pick-me-up.

Always Lay A Newborn On The Back

Let’s talk newborn sleep safety. 

Remember, when it’s naptime or bedtime for your baby, ‘back to sleep’ is the way to go. Laying your newborn on their back is essential for safe and sound sleep.

Keep their sleeping space simple: a firm mattress with just a fitted sheet. Skip the toys and blankets to lower the risk of SIDS and keep your baby safe.

For extra coziness, opt for a sleep sack. It’s snug and safe, perfect for keeping your little one warm without loose bedding. Place them on their back in their minimalist crib, and they’re all set for a secure sleep.

Do Not Let The Newborn Sleep Without Burping

It’s not safe for newborns to sleep right after feeding without a burp, yet many little ones tend to drift off during their feed. Those tiny tummies need help to release trapped gas, and skipping this step can lead to discomfort or even wakefulness later on.

What to do if your baby falls asleep while feeding? Here’s a gentle way to burp them without causing too much disturbance:

Upright Position: Carefully hold your baby upright against your shoulder. This position naturally helps the gas move up and out.

Gentle Pats: Give their back gentle pats or rubs. It’s about being soothing, not forceful.

Side-Lying Technique: Alternatively, lay your baby on their side on your lap and pat their back softly.

Maintain a Calm Environment: Keep the room quiet so if they burp, they can easily drift back into a peaceful sleep.

A quick burp can make all the difference, ensuring your baby sleeps comfortably and safely.

Practice Safe Co-Sleeping

Co-sleeping, or sharing your room with your baby, can be a great way to bond and make nighttime feedings easier. But it’s crucial to do it safely. 

AAP recommends that parents sleep in the same room – but not in the same bed as a baby, preferably for at least the first six months.

Here’s how to ensure safe co-sleeping:

  • Separate but Close: The safest way to co-sleep is to have your baby in their own crib or bassinet within your room. This way, they’re close by, but in their own safe space.
  • No Bed-Sharing: It’s recommended to avoid sharing the same bed, especially with very young infants, to reduce the risk of SIDS and accidental suffocation.
  • Clear Space: Whether it’s a crib or a bassinet, make sure it’s free from pillows, loose bedding, and toys.
  • Firm Sleep Surface: Ensure your baby sleeps on a firm mattress, just like they would in a separate crib.
  • Avoid Soft Surfaces: Avoid placing the baby to sleep on soft surfaces like couches, armchairs, or plush bedding.
  • No Impairments: Never co-sleep if you’re under the influence of alcohol, medications, or other substances that could impair your ability to respond to your baby.

Consider a bedside bassinet that can keep your baby separate but close to you. If that looks expensive, you can also get a nest bassinet and place it on your bed. 

Handling Night Wakings

When your newborn wakes up at night – and they will, since long sleep stretches aren’t their thing yet – how you respond can make a big difference. Remember, night is for sleeping, not playtime. Here’s how to handle those night wakings:

  • Keep the Lights Off: Resist the urge to turn on the lights. Use a dim nightlight if necessary. Bright lights signal to your baby that it’s time to be awake and active.
  • Limit Interaction: During these wake-ups, try to keep interaction to a minimum. Feed, change if necessary, but avoid talking and playing. It’s about creating a calm, sleepy environment.
  • Consistency is Key: Be consistent with this low-key approach. Over time, your baby will start to understand that nighttime is for sleeping, not for fun and games.

By keeping night wakings calm and quiet, you’re gently teaching your newborn the difference between night and day, helping them (and you!) get back to sleep more quickly.

Understand Colic

Around the 3rd or 4th week, some newborns can throw a curveball into their sleep routine with a phenomenon called colic. Colic episodes often strike in the late afternoon or evening and can wreak havoc on sleep, for both baby and parents.

What is colic? It’s those unexplained bouts of fussiness and crying that can interrupt sleep and leave everyone feeling frazzled. But there’s hope! Here’s how to manage it:

  • Recognize the Signs: Colic might be the culprit if your baby starts having prolonged crying spells during their typical sleep times. They may also clench their fists, arch their back, and have a red face.
  • Rule Out Other Causes: Before assuming it’s colic, ensure your baby isn’t hungry, tired, or in need of a diaper change. Sometimes, these basic needs can mimic colic symptoms.
  • Colic Drops: With your doctor’s guidance, consider using colic drops. These over-the-counter remedies can help soothe your baby’s discomfort and improve sleep quality for both of you.
  • Comfort Measures: Experiment with different soothing techniques – gentle rocking, swaddling, or a warm bath – to help your baby relax.
  • Stay Calm: Coping with colic can be stressful, but remember, it’s a phase, and it does get better. Stay patient and composed during those challenging nights.

Consult with Your Pediatrician: If colic persists or you have concerns, don’t hesitate to consult your pediatrician. They can provide expert advice and ensure there are no underlying medical issues.

Colic and sleep interruptions often go hand in hand, but with the right approach and the guidance of your doctor, you can help your baby (and yourself) get through this challenging phase.
